Rankings and Academic Recognition

Trakya University (Turkish: Trakya Üniversitesi) is a public university located in the city of Edirne, in northwestern Turkey. It was founded on July 20, 1982, and is the largest educational institution in the East Thrace region. The roots of higher education in the region date back to 1488, when a medical school was founded under Sultan Bayezid II. Today, the university plays an important role in the scientific, cultural and social life of the region, bringing together more than 45,000 students and offering a variety of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.

Trakya University is one of the leading regional universities in Turkey.

According to Web of Science:

  • In 2005–2009, 1,206 scientific papers were published, including 973 full-length articles.

  • In 2009 – more than 1,750 citations.

  • In 2010, it ranked 45th among 131 universities in Turkey in terms of the number of publications in international scientific journals.

  • The University adheres to the principles of the Bologna Process, which ensures international recognition of diplomas in Europe.

Faculties and academic departments

The university operates:

 

  • 10 faculties: Medicine, Engineering and Architecture, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Education, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Philology, Pharmacy and Dentistry.

 

  • 4 institutes: social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences and Balkan studies.

 

  • 5 colleges: Conservatory, Physical Education and Sports, Foreign Languages, Applied Sciences in Edirne and Kesan.

 

  • 9 vocational schools and more than 20 research centers.

Campuses

The university has several modern campuses:

 

  • The Balkan Campus is the main campus and includes the rector’s office, the largest Congress Centre in the Balkans, cultural and sports facilities, the Trakya University Hospital (the 5th largest in Turkey), faculties and institutes.

  • The Kaaagach Campus is the former rector's office building and now houses the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Museum of the Treaty of Lausanne and the Lausanne Garden.

  • Ayşekadın Campus - Faculty of Health Sciences, College of Foreign Languages, Kindergarten and other units.

  • Ahmet Tarık Karadeniz Campus – Engineering Faculties.

  • There are also campuses in the areas of Kesan, Ipsala, Havsa, Uzunkopru and others.

Student life

Student life at Trakia University is diverse: there are dozens of student clubs, including theater, chess, music, poetry, research, etc. Festivals, sports competitions and cultural events are held.
A special place is occupied by the projects Balkan Gençlik Ateşi (Balkan Youth Fire - Folk Dance Ensemble) and the Balkan Symphony Orchestra, which tour the Balkan countries and represent the cultural wealth of the region.

Dormitory

The university provides dormitories both on campus and nearby. The dormitories are managed by KYK (Turkish Credit and Accommodation Agency) and provide comfortable accommodation for students: rooms for 2-4 people, shared kitchens, laundry facilities, recreation areas and study rooms. There are also many private student dormitories in Edirne.
